information on what years are covered by parish records in Limerick. Most parishes will only conduct searched through their records if the exact date of baptism or marriage is known, as most parish records are not indexed. This route will usually result in a fee being paid to the parish. Parish records for Limerick are held on microfilm at the National Library Ireland, information on the library can be found here http://www.nli.ie/

The Limerick City Library, The Granary, Michael Street, Limerick (061) 407510, - hold the 1901 & 1911 censuses, they also hold the electoral registers lists from 1923 onwards, these lists include the name and address of all those eligible to vote in Limerick city. They also hold a large collection of local newspapers; these can be used in association with genealogy, as in the case of a death as some of these were recorded in local presses, it is advised though to only attempt to use newspapers for this purpose if at least the year of the event is known.

The Church of the Latter Day Saints, Dooradoyle Rd, Limerick (061) 309442, - hold the indexes to all births, deaths and marriages that took place in Ireland from 1864 for Catholic records and slightly earlier for non-Catholics. The information gained from these indexes can be sent to the General Register Office, Joyce House, 8-11 Lombard Street East, Dublin 2 (01) 635 40 00 http://www.groireland.ie/ and for a small fee of €1.90 a photocopy of the original register can be purchased.

You can access census, church and military records, immigration and naturalization archives, newspapers and periodicals here

The minimum amount of information necessary to enable a search to be carried out is the name of the person sought, a rough idea (say, to within ten years) of when a baptism or marriage took place, and the name of persons -parents or siblings- who can help distinguish the object of one's search from others of the same name.

If you know exactly what you want, before or after 1900, but wish to obtain certification of it from a pastor or civil registry, then you can access them as follows:

Limerick County: Registry of Births, Marriages and Deaths, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick.

Limerick City: Registry of Births, Marriages and Deaths, Shelbourne Rd, Limerick.

Registry of births and deaths commenced in 1864. Marriages in registry office or non-Catholic church were registered from 1845; those of Catholics only from 1864.

Before 1864, there are only baptismal records. If you know the parish, then Very Rev. Parish Priest, Name of Parish, Co. Limerick will find the right person. For Church of Ireland baptisms, best write to Mrs Noreen Ellecker, St Mary's Cathedral, Nicholas St, Limerick.

After 1900, people are frequently searching for relatives of known ancestors. The best vehicle for such an enquiry is probably the local newspaper: The Limerick Leader, O'Connell St, Limerick. They tend to present a few such enquiries together from time to time, free of charge, and leave it to the readership to respond. Such enquiries should contain plenty of detail if one is to have a chance of jogging someone's memory.

Happy Hunting!
