Limerick Is Capital Of The World For Powerlifting

Limerick is already the European capital of rugby and this weekend it was also the capital of the world for powerlifting.

Over 220 athletes from across the globe descended on Limerick last Friday to compete in the World Powerlifting Championships.

The four-day event is taking place in the Kilmurry Lodge Hotel, and, according to Tommy Dillon from Southill Powerlifters, Limerick athletes have great medal chances.

"For the past four years, Southill have brought home gold and this year I am confident we will bring home medals.

Seven Limerick men are on the Irish team of 22 from both North and South Ireland," said Mr Dillon. He says lifters have been training for the last six months and that competition will be fierce.

It is expected that many new world records will be set at the event.

Mr Dillon paid tribute to all who were instrumental in bringing the event to the Treaty city.

"Promoter Shane Brodie and secretary Stephanie Duffy have worked tirelessly to ensure everything is in readiness for such a prestigious event," said Mr Dillon.

The event takes place in the Plassey Room in the Kilmurry Lodge Hotel and it's not only men involved. Women are also taking part in the event that kicks off at 9am and finishes at 10pm on Friday and Saturday.

The competition aspect of the championships ends at 5pm on Sunday, but the closing ceremony and grand banquet follow at 8.30pm.

It costs only €5 for adults to see the some of the strongest men in the world; children go free.

However, there is more than one powerlifting club in the city.

Liam Beville is PRO of Irish Powerlifting and he's also affiliated to Patrickswell Powerlifting club. He emphasises the good that Powerlifting as a sport and powerlifters do on the north side of the city.

"We're trying to get young people off the streets and give them some outlet," said Mr Beville.

He believes that young people are more likely to listen to sportsmen rather than other authority figures.

"They have great respect for anybody with strength, They do listen to you and approach you when you're walking down the street," said Mr Beville.
