Jim Kemmy museum is a worldwide hit

There were 957,355 hits on the Jim Kemmy Museum internet catalogue during 2006, which totals almost two million hits since the launch in June 2004.

The Arts Department in City Hall also confirmed that during the year, 888 new records were added to the catalogue, bringing the total number of records in it to 54,441, and 2,732 digitised images were added to the catalogue, bringing the total to 24,157.

A spokesperson for the department has confirmed that 11,890 people visited the museum during the year and that email requests and comments were received from all over the world.

"Information exchanges are two-way, particularly from the descendants of Limerick people living abroad. More than 2,000 enquiries were dealt with in total, from personal callers, by phone, letter and email.

"During the year, the museum received a grant from the Heritage Council towards the restoration of the 1820 painting, The New Bridge at Limerick, by Samuel Brocas,

A total of 153 items were added to the Jim Kemmy Museum collection.

Chief among the items were: a Royal Irish Constabulary officer’s Webley pistol taken at the Dromkeen Ambush, 1921: four 19th century Limerick pocket watches by the jewellery firms of Cromer, Moser Brothers, R Wallace and Edward Moser:

the flag used by Mayor Casey to start the first Limerick road motor race of 1935: the civil articles of Limerick, printed in 1692: 18th century prints of William, Lord Blakeney, County Limerick MP for Kilmallock 1727 to 1756 and of St Mary’s Cathedral and a photograph by O’Brien

Limerick City Museum, renamed the Jim Kemmy Municipal Museum in memory of the late Mayor, T.D. and historian, moved to its new premises at Castle Lane, Nicholas Street (beside King Johnís Castle), in 1999.

The new location provides much needed space to display the ever-growing collection and also to allow for increased exhibitions to be held.
