City set to party over Riverfest weekend

Thousands of people are expected to flock to Limerick this May Bank Holiday weekend, as the Treaty City’s biggest festival gets underway.

Promising an action-packed few days, Riverfest is designed to celebrate all that’s great about Limerick city, from the resource of the river Shannon, to our music, sport, fashion, arts, food, diverse communities, and much more.

The exciting new river attraction will be the world famous Asgard 11 - the Irish sail training vessel that will be open to the public at Limerick Docks, from Friday May 4 to Monday 7.

Riverfest 2007 will also feature great favourites for all the family, including: the International BBQ Cook Off, the European Market, a spectacular Fireworks Display and River Fringe exhibitions and shows.

Among the other highlights will be: the River Shannon-igans Kayaking, Festival of Urban Sports, Open Waters at Limerick Docks, Street Theatre Row, 2007 Tops Odyssey and "Open Season” at the Limerick Youth Service.

All revolving around the River Shannon, "Riverfest has something for everyone,” according to Mayor Joe Leddin.

"It is a wonderful opportunity for Limerick people to invite their friends and family to come here for a holiday weekend and sample the best of the city’s life. Riverfest 2007 will be bigger and better than ever before and this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the positive aspects of Limerick city, from the band festival to the International BBQ Cook-Off and the European Market,” Mayor Leddin added.

The Limerick Co-ordination Office started Riverfest in 2004, and it has grown steadily since then to become the city’s biggest festival.

One of the main river attractions will be the Blazing Paddles Marathon which will finish at Matthew Bridge on Saturday May 5, and the Freestyle King
