A major development for Moyross that will have significant local involvement has been approved by the Government. Details of which were discussed when the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern visited the housing estate in Limerick last Friday.
The focal point of the development will be a village centre that will include commercial, retail and educational outlets.
"I asked the Taoiseach to visit Moyross so that he can see at first hand the excellent work that is being done by the people and community leaders there. I want to show him that Moyross is a place where great work is underway for the benefit of the entire community,” the minister said.
One of the local politicians for the area, Cllr John Ryan, who is a lecturer at Limerick Institute of Technology said that plans are in the pipeline for an extension of the college campus into the Moyross estate.
According to the councillor a well known local benefactor is willing to financially support the development.
Minister O’Dea has been assured by Justice Minister, Michael McDowell that the garda commissioner is personally addressing the policing needs of Moyross.
"With 275 new gardai joining the Force every 90 days until the target of 14,000 is reached before the end of this year, the commissioner is now drawing up plans on how best to distribute these new gardai in Limerick and in Moyross specifically,” said Minister O’Dea who adds:
"The needs of Moyross will be a big part of the garda commissioner’s plan. The Moyross area is policed by gardai from Mayorstone Park Garda Station whose personnel strength on December 31 2002 and September 27 of this year was 41 and 49 respectively.
This includes one sergeant and three gardai allocated to the station on September 21, which represents an increase of eight during that period. An additional garda is due to be allocated to the Mayorstone Station on October 10 2006.”
The minister said that as well as the routine patrols, a number of additional patrolling initiatives are now in place for Moyross.
"A dedicated uniform mobile patrol, consisting of one sergeant and two gardai operate a specific night-time patrol of the area and community policing is a vital element of the policing strategy there A vehicle allocated to the unit is used, full-time in the area and an active youth diversion project is also in place.”
