Comhaltas stages Seisiún at Adare

TOURISTS to County Limerick this summer will leave with an impression of a healthy and vibrant tradition in Irish music, song and dance thanks to the local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.

The branch is one of 41 groups holding entertainment evenings called Seisiún at various cultural centres throughout the country during July and August.

The talented County Limerick group will perform at Adare Heritage Centre every Tuesday evening from next week to August 17 under the baton of the show's producer Peig Ryan who promises an unforgettable evening.

"We will have music song, dance, storytelling and poetry reading, it will vary each week. I have distributed some literature in Adare and have got a very good reaction. People were delighted and said "why are ye doing it for only one night a week," said Mrs Ryan, who added that Seisiún is not just for visiting tourists but for local people who are looking for an entertaining and different night out.

Seisiún, which was reintroduced in 2000 is funded by Roinn na Gaeltachta and was launched by Síle De Valera, former Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands.

Visitors will also be encouraged to join in and will be encouraged to take part in a country set-dance or the haymaker jig or to contribute an item from their own culture.

There is a strong Comhaltas tradition in the Murroe and Cappamore area where 75 students took Royal Irish Academy of Music exams and many travel annually to perform in France.

Mrs Ryan paid tribute to Tomás Ó Maoldonaigh, principal of Cappamore boys' school, who allows classes to be held in the school. Mr Ó Maoldonaigh, who will also perform over the course of Seisiún is National Secretary of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and his wife Eileen chairs of the local branch.

"Seisiún is a very good platform for musicians to train themselves in presentation. It is important from a cultural viewpoint and there is a financial bonus for tourism, it shows that we have a living Irish tradition so tourists can take that message back home with them," said Mr Ó Maoldonaigh, whose son Marcus and daughter Yvonne will perform on banjo and fiddle during Seisiún.

Those from the Murroe / Cappamore branch who will perform during Seisiún are dancers Dearbhaile de Brún from Corbally, Aoife Moloney from Newport, Katy O'Dwyer, Cappamore, Kevin Farrell from Newport, Eamon Moloney, Newport, Catherine Mulcahy,

Yvonne Moloney from Cappamore on fiddle, Margaret Hehir from County Clare, Marcus Moloney from Cappamore, banjo, Mary Murphy, flute Cappamore, Katy O'Sullivan concertina, Nora Butler, singer, Dáithí O'Connell, storyteller and Noreen Ryan, piano accordion.
