National award for social housing development in Clonlara

Clare County Council’s social housing development at Glór na Srutha, Knockbrack Lower, Clonlara, has been named one of the principal winners at the 2015 Irish Council for Social Housing (ICSH) Allianz Community Housing Awards.

The Community Housing Awards, which encourage, recognise and reward excellence in the delivery of social housing has been in existence since 2003 and this year marks the 7th biennial Community Housing Awards.

The award of overall winner of the Housing for Families (Rural) category was accepted on behalf of Clare County Council by Cllr James Breen, Cathaoirleach, and Cllr Gerry Flynn Chair of the local authority’s Housing Special Policy Committee. Also present at the awards ceremony in Dublin were staff of the Council’s Housing Department.

All 12 units in the Glór na Srutha scheme have been occupied since the housing development was completed at a cost of €3.284m in September 2014 by L & M Keating Contractors.

Comprising two-bed and three-bed units based on a single storey and two-storey grouping, the scheme was officially opened last November by Minister Paudie Coffey, Minister for Housing, Planning & Co-ordination of Construction 2020.

Commenting on the Council’s award win, Councillor James Breen said: “It was a fantastic achievement to construct such high quality architecturally designed houses with the attention to detail and low energy cost features. On behalf of the Council I wish to congratulate the contractors and design team on this award win.”

“The Glór na Srutha scheme is a good example of careful planning. This is evidenced by the integration of the development with the existing adjacent Derryvinna Estate,” explained Councillor Gerry Flynn.

He added: “Clare County Council strives to build communities and not just homes. I am delighted to see that the tenants are very proud of their new homes and are thriving as active members of the local community.”

Glór na Srutha was financed by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government under the Social Housing Investment Programme.
