University of Limerick

The University of Limerick is situated just 2 miles outside the city of Limerick on the banks of the Shannon River in the Republic of Ireland. On its extensive and beautifully landscaped campus it houses a technological industrial park encompassing nearly 100 small- and medium-sized firms, a business incubation centre run by Shannon Development, two separate student residential villages, a nationally acclaimed Concert Hall, two pubs, seven restaurants and the main University buildings themselves.

The University of Limerick began life as a National Institute of Higher Education (NIHE) and concentrated its research and teaching in the areas of Electronic Engineering, Industrial Chemistry and Biochemistry and Business Studies in which it built a reputation for excellence that holds true to this day. Under the guidance of visionary president Dr. Ed Walsh the NIHE gained University status in 1989 and since then has grown to a student population of nearly 10,000. Current president, Dr. Roger Downer has continued the University of Limerick's high quality research programme by pursuing an ambitious strategic development plan which envisages investment of over 100 million Euros on research facilities and a special initiative to attract international research expertise in the targeted areas of:

  • Information & Communications Technology
  • Biosciences & Biomedical Engineering
  • Materials & Surface Science
  • Work, Productivity & Quality
  • Humanities & Social Sciences

The infrastructure of the University of Limerick itself continues to expand with new student villages being built on the opposite banks of the Shannon River connected by a specially constructed covered bridge. New Infomatics, Aeronautical Research (including complete wind tunnel) and Student Service buildings have been completed in the last year and a massive Sports arena with Ireland's only Olympic-sized swimming pool will play host to international sporting events from the Summer of 2001.

Continuing large-scale investment from multi-national companies such as Nokia and Boart-Longyear ensure that the University of Limerick's fundamental beliefs of 'Relevance and Excellence' in research and teaching will be well served into the future.
